Starting in December, riders of New Zealand's public transportation will be able to use their credit or debit cards to pay for buses, trains, and other services, the BBC reports.
The rollout of the "MyWay by Metro" system, a partnership between the country's transportation authority and 13 other authorities, will begin in Canterbury, followed by Timaru Metro schoolbuses and the Temuka service in January 2025, per a press release.
"The technology of MyWay by Metro means many of our customers are already used topaying for public transport with their credit or debit card and we'll be providing support for other customers as they transition from Metrocard payments to Move," says Timaru Mayor Nigel Bowen.
"We're fortunate to be the first region in Aotearoa to launch Move, which will become one ticketing and payment system for public transport across motu," a rep for the New Zealand Transport Agency tells Stuff.co.nz.
"Tagging off will allow many of our customers to pay off on public transport in the rest of New Zealand and provides customers about how they pay for public transport, digital payment methods like Apple Pay or Google Pay,Prepaid Move cards will also be available from a widenetwork, helping us plan routes and service improvements,"
