"We had to change our conversation from 'Hey, let's meet up for a drink on this patio' to 'Hey man, how you doing?'" That's how Curtis Alexander and Steve Mix started their foundation, Day1Dads, after struggling to connect during pandemic restrictions in Calgary, the CBC reports.
"We had to watch grown men who are in their late 50s and 60s who come back teary-eyed and crying [saying], 'I've never had the opportunity to create a brave space for me to talk about my struggles,'" says Alexander, who with Mix has raised tens of thousands of dollars for mental health services for fathers since they founded the foundation in 2021.
"The impact was really cool, to watch grown men who are in their late 50s and 60s who come back teary-eyed and crying [saying], 'I've never had the opportunity to create a brave space for me to talk about my struggles,'" says Alexander.
"We had to change our conversation from 'Hey, let's meet up for a drink on this patio' to 'Hey man, how you doing?'" The foundation has since hosted three tournaments, raised tens of thousands of dollars for mental health organizations
