"They're earning to learn, they're learning to earn."
That's the message Brennan Pursell, director of DeSales University's Center for Data Analytics and Applied AI, had for school directors in Allentown, Pa., who on Thursday approved a $166,291 partnership with the district to offer an eight-week summer program in artificial intelligence, the Morning Call reports.
The Allentown Summer Artificial Intelligence Institute will focus on data analytics and AI technologies, with students spending 36 hours a week at the DeSales University Hub in downtown Allentown learning how to work with spreadsheets, descriptive and predictive analytics, and other AI technologies, per a DeSales press release.
Students can also earn six college credits and a stipend of up to $4,355.
"We'll be looking at spreadsheets for air quality sensors and the different types of data, and eventually these air quality sensors will be put in different buildings in the Allentown School District," Pursell tells the Morning Call.
"That's only one of the things we'll be doing."
Students will also learn about bias and injustice in AI datasets and technologies, as well as the lack of representation of marginalized groups in these fields, per the Lehigh Valley News.
