If your pet happens to be a small dog, cat, or whatever, you may want to consider getting a chip implanted.

That's because Australia's VetChip has won the $25,000 grand prize in Purina's Pet Care Innovation Prize, a competition for pet care startups that took place at Global Pet Expo in January, per a press release.

VetChip's device, which is implanted into a pet's body and uses a smartphone app to gather health data, alerts owners via an app if an issue or injury is detected, which can then be treated more quickly.

"This award will help us to unlock a world of possibilities for proactive animal healthcare, including welfare monitoring, nutrition support, and detection of diseases," says VetChip co-founder Garnett Hall, a veterinarian.

VetChip was one of five startups that pitched their businesses to industry influencers and investors at Global Pet Expo.

The others were Arch Pet Food, BestyBnB, SwiftPaws, and Boing Boing.
