Artificial intelligence is "starting to enter the nuclear sector with substantial investment," the UK's Office for Nuclear Regulation says, per World Nuclear News, and regulators there are now trying to figure out how to regulate it.
The regulator has created a "sandbox" in which it has tested two applications of AI in the nuclear industry: real-time use of the technology to " facilitate the safe operability of robots in constrained spaces," and the application of AI to "ensure appropriate and targeted plant maintenance."
The report from the sandbox pilot, the first of its kind anywhere in the world, notes that the benefits of AI should be clearly articulated, and any risks understood and managed through "robust arrangements."
The report also recommends that regulators take into account different considerations for each application of AI, that AI systems be phased in to "build confidence," and that regulation be based on "a principles-based approach to regulation."
