The state has declared Oct.
18, 2023, to be "Green Infrastructure Day," reports the Providence Journal.
That's the day a group called the Rhode Island Green Infrastructure Coalition (RIGIC) will hold its fifth annual Innovation Expo, which will focus on " Nature-Based Solutions for Climate Resilience," per a press release.
"When rain hits a hard surface, it becomes stormwater runoff," explainsRIGIC.
"It flows down our streets and sidewalks picking up fertilizer from lawns, animal droppings, fluids, de-icing chemicals, and litter."
That polluted water then enters the watershed through a storm drain or directly into a river or pond.
The result is water that is unsafe for human use or for the aquatic ecosystem.
"Green Infrastructure slows down this polluted stormwater to be absorbed more naturally into the environment, instead of flowing into...
stormwater infrastructure such as storm drains," saysRIGIC's website.
In fact, the event will feature a keynote speech from Clara Decerbo, the director of Providence Emergency Management Agency.
